Château Pontet-Canet 2012

No estate in Bordeaux has taken a bigger swing than Pontet-Canet. Under Alfred Tesseron, it became the first classified growth to farm entirely biodynamically — horses replaced tractors to spare the gravel soils — and the bet paid off spectacularly: both the 2009 and 2010 vintages earned Robert Parker's perfect 100 points, a feat almost no Fifth Growth has ever approached.

The 2012 carries that same DNA into a wine you can actually open tonight. Blackcurrant, graphite and smoked meat on the nose, with the vivid purity of fruit this estate became famous for — Decanter's tasters singled out its character and sappy, mouthwatering appeal. Structured enough for the cellar, generous enough for a weekend barbecue with people who appreciate what's in their glass.

At the table: Dry-aged steak, barbecue and smoked meats, mushroom dishes. A wine with the stuffing for big flavours.

Sommelier's Note

The 2012 Château Pontet-Canet is a natural fit for barbecue and the smoker. Its biodynamic farming produces unusually vivid, pure fruit, with graphite and smoked-meat notes that mirror a low-and-slow cook directly. Firm tannins give it the structure for charred, fatty cuts, while the fruit's purity keeps it from turning heavy.

The 2012 Château Pontet-Canet is a natural fit for barbecue and the smoker. Its biodynamic farming — the estate famously ploughs by horse — produces a wine of unusually vivid, pure fruit, with graphite and smoked-meat notes that mirror a low-and-slow cook directly. Firm tannins give it the structure to stand up to charred, fatty cuts, while the fruit's purity keeps it from turning heavy. A Pauillac for the backyard as much as the boardroom.
