Château Rauzan-Gassies 2000

Rauzan-Gassies ranks among the original Second Growths of the 1855 Classification — a distinction shared by only fourteen estates on earth — and the 2000 vintage caught it in a legendary year, when near-perfect conditions across Bordeaux produced wines that have defined cellars for a generation.

Now fully mature, it shows everything Margaux is prized for: violets and blackcurrant on the nose, cedar and a suggestion of tobacco beneath, and a palate of real polish and elegance. This is the graceful, perfumed side of Bordeaux — a wine for candlelit dinners rather than steakhouse bravado. Mature classified-growth Margaux from the millennium vintage rarely surfaces at sensible prices; when it does, it tends not to linger.

At the table: Herb-crusted lamb, roast duck, game birds. The floral side of Margaux flatters poultry especially well.

Sommelier's Note

The 2000 Château Rauzan-Gassies shows the graceful, perfumed side of Margaux — violets and blackcurrant over cedar, now fully mature. Its polish suits the gentler end of the table: herb-crusted lamb, roast duck, or game birds, where the wine's florality can flatter rather than fight the dish. Wine Spectator called it full-bodied with a long, long finish — an excellent wine.
