Ornellaia 2020
Ornellaia 2020
The estate named this vintage "La Perfezione" — the Perfection — which takes a certain nerve. Then the scores arrived: 98 points from James Suckling, 97 from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, and the name stopped looking like bravado.
The 2020 growing season on the Tuscan coast was warm and dry, and the wine wears it magnificently: ripe black fruit layered with tobacco, vanilla and mocha, a palate of remarkable breadth and density, and a finish that unspools slowly. Spectacular now after an hour in the decanter; monumental in ten years. The bottle for the occasions that matter most — a landmark gift, a cellar cornerstone, a celebration made liquid.

Sommelier's Note
The 2020 Ornellaia — the estate's 'La Perfezione' vintage — is a spectacular match for the steakhouse table, and Bistecca alla Fiorentina in particular. Its density and structure were built for dry-aged beef: tobacco, vanilla and mocha layer over ripe black fruit, echoing the char and marbling of a great steak. The bottle for the biggest cut on the menu.

The 2020 Ornellaia — the estate's own 'La Perfezione' vintage — is a spectacular match for the steakhouse table, and Bistecca alla Fiorentina in particular. Its density and structure were built for dry-aged beef: notes of tobacco, vanilla and mocha layer over ripe black fruit, echoing the char and marbling of a great steak. James Suckling's 98 points and Wine Advocate's 97 reflect a wine of real ambition, one that rewards an equally ambitious cut. This is the bottle for the biggest steak on the menu.
